Without imposing a prominent architectural footprint, the space of the Museum of Contemporary Art store is contained by a floating glass box that ambiguously holds and is held by the solid, space-shaping elements. Rather than housing program within an opaque volume, instead ceiling, wall and floor elements collaborate to provide shade, divide space and allow enclosure while also acting independently as surfaces and furniture elements for merchandise display, projection and advertisement. The floor plane of the store folds up into a wall that simultaneously opens up an entrance path for the store and makes a visual connection initiated by the glass partition across the plaza to the restaurant. The MoCA Store, then, doubles as an occupiable and billboard for exhibits and events.
