Description

The project focus revolved around three key issues: challenging the diverse architectural identity of the surrounding community, fulfilling the core programmatic need of the client, and developing a contemporary design vocabulary for the overall design.

The Design developed from the desire to introduce a modern element into an area that is steeped in traditional housing styles. As a point of departure, the Spanish Ranch houses around the project site were examined. A few important elements began to emerge. The central rotunda, the courtyard defined by a surrounding wall element, and the relationship of exterior spaces to living spaces all served to fuel the design of the project. By further studying these contextual elements and their associated geometries a new contemporary language of arcs, hyperbolic curves, cubes, intersecting planes and voids was created. This hybrid vocabulary would guide the design of the project.

In an area steeped in traditional styles this single-family residence introduces a modern vocabulary that both questions and learns from the diverse context surrounding it.
